GALLERY: Lumberjacks outlast Gold Miners

KIRKLAND LAKE, ON – The Hearst Lumberjacks scored twice in the second period as they went on to defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 3-1 at the Joe Mavrinac Community Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Tyler Patterson and Adam Shillinglaw had 1 goal and 1 assist each for the Lumberjacks.

The home squad opened the scoring as Jason Towindo netted his 9th of the campaign from Jacob Lamoureux at 4:51. Lamoureux rushed the puck down the right side, stumbled and sent a pass over to Towindo who put it home on Lumberjacks goalie Russ DeCoste.

Late in the frame, the Lumberjacks replied as Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne put home his 10th at 19:18 which made it 1-1 after 20 minutes. Bourdon-Lamoyne jammed a puck home on a scramble in front of the Gold Miners starter Trent Boryszczuk.

Second period, the Lumberjacks got their first lead as Adam Shillinglaw slid down from the blueline to the right circle and fired a great shot that beat the Gold Miners netminder for a 2-1 Lumberjacks lead at 1:50 of the second period.

Late in the period, Tyler Patterson put the Lumberjacks up 3-1 with his 30th of the season, after an offensive draw where he buried a shot from close range at 18:27.

The two sided exchanged chances in a scoreless but penalty-filled third period.

Ryan Decoste made 26 saves for the Lumberjacks in the win while Gold Miners netminder Trent Boryszczuk made 44 saves in the loss.

With the win, the Lumberjacks move to 26-13-3-2 and vault into second spot past the idle Voodoos in the NOJHL East.

The loss drops the Gold Miners, who sit in 5th in the NOJHL East, with a record of 8-33-4-2.
