SUDBURY, Ont. – Firing on all cylinders on the power play, the Hearst Lumberjacks converted three times on the man advantage in the second stanza as part of a 6-2 triumph over the Greater Sudbury Cubs in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Coming off a two-goal night in his NOJHL debut Thursday, Greater Sudbury’s Tannen Iserhoff found the range once more by connecting 14:43 into the proceedings as he neatly tipped in a feed in front by Mason Walker on a delayed penalty call.
Answering with an equalizer prior to the intermission, Hearst’s Liam Boswell forced a turnover in the neutral zone then sent Mathieu Comeau in on Cubs’ starter Noah Beaulne and saw him bury his chance into the top left-hand corner.
In the middle stanza, the Lumberjacks went in front, via special teams at 11:28, as they controlled a draw and worked it around nicely before finding Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne, who spun and slid a low attempt past Beaulne.
Going right back to the man advantage, the visitors made it 3-1 off some more crisp puck movement that was finished off by DonHeaven Veilleux from in close.
Up a skater once more late on the session, Bourdon-Lemoyne got just enough of a Jean-Pierre Audras point shot to have it trickle slowly across the goal line.
Third period play saw the home side pull to within two at 3:22 compliments of Eidan Macartney, who generated a chance after winning a race down ice that led to him slamming in his first by burying a Walker set-up by Hearst netminder Alexandre Boivin.
Hearst held on from there however, picking up a pair of late long-range empty netters off the sticks of Veilleux and Comeau, shorthanded, to finish off the scoring.
