KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A three-goal third period helped the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners return to the win column following a lengthy drought as they went on to defeat the Hearst Lumberjacks 5-2 Sunday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
An early man advantage helped Hearst to commence the scoring 4:24 into the contest on the 10th tally of the season by Dominic Dumas.
Sporting Royal Canadian Legion jerseys for a second straight game, Kirkland Lake countered before the first frame was finished thanks to Max Newnam’s seventh.
Moving to the middle stanza, the Gold Miners took the lead at 7:14 when A.J. Campbell collected his second of the year with help from Spencer Jones.
In the third, the hosts got the eventual game-winner off the stick of Connor Van Weelie at 5:46.
The Lumberjacks then cut into the deficit three minutes later when Olivier Cloutier-Faucher buried his 14th of the campaign.
Play in the final half of the frame saw Kyler Campbell and Robert McLaughlin, into an empty net, supply some insurance to give Kirkland Lake their first victory since back on October 11.
Kohl Reddy was called upon to make 42 saves in the Gold Miners triumph while Rahul Bola faced 32 attempts in defeat for Hearst.
