KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A Tyler Fyfe power play goal early in the third period proved to be the difference as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners defeated the Hearst Lumberjacks 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
The home side opened the scoring 4:45 into the contest thanks to Lucas Lyszyk who finished off the work of Parker Allison and Gregory Trudeau-Paquet, who had two assists on the night.
Moving on to the second stanza, Samuel Bourdages drew Hearst level at 8:37 only to see Connor Evans convert on a Gold Miners’ man advantage opportunity to put them back on top three minutes later.
Max Johnson was quick to answer that though for the Lumberjacks to knot the affair at 2-2 after two.
Up a man to begin the third, Fyfe was quick to convert as his team-leading 29th tally put Kirkland Lake back in front 51 seconds into the frame as he set a new single-season high for goals with the marker.
There would be no further scoring from that point on as the Gold Miners held on for their 20th win of the season.
Cade McEwan made 28 saves to earn the victory for Kirkland Lake while Matt Kustra faced 36 attempts in defeat for Hearst.
