SUDBURY, Ont. – A couple of Liam Boswell man advantage markers helped lift the Hearst Lumberjcks to a 5-2 victory over the Soo Thunderbirds Wednesday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase action at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Clicking on an early power play, Hearst took the lead 53 seconds in when Boswell snapped a rising attempt from the high slot that sailed high over the blocker of Sault Ste. Marie starter Lincoln Mellenthin.
The Lumberjacks then went up by a pair early in second stanza, just as a man advantage they were on had expired, with Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne neatly deflecting in an Aiden Kalin attempt.
Getting one back, the Thunderbirds’ Cole Schreiber notched his initial NOJHL tally at 15:09 as he pumped in a loose puck from the right of Hearst netminder Alexandre Boivin.
The Soo then drew level before the second intermission with Aiden Atkinson slamming in a rebound from the top of the crease.
Moving to the third period, a brief relief stint for the Soo’s Noah Metivier saw him make one stop while Mellenthin dealt with an equipment issue.
Retaking the lead with half a period to go, a Boswell power play point blast beat a partially blocked out Mellenthin for the eventual difference maker.
Hearst then generated a couple of turnovers in the T-Birds end which eventually led to Kalin to tucking in a backhand with under nine minutes to play.
The Soo pulled their goalkeeper in the late going in an effort to draw closer, however Tyler Patterson iced it for the Lumberjacks with an empty net effort from centre ice to conclude the afternoon’s scoring.
With the result, Hearst raised their record to 5-3-0-0 while in defeat the Thunderbirds slipped to 4-3-0-1.
