Thunderbirds edge Lumberjacks 3-2

SUDBURY, Ont. – Camryn Baber scored twice, including the game-winner, to help lift the Soo Thunderbirds to a 3-2 win over the Hearst Lumberjacks Tuesday at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex in Sudbury.

It was scoreless through the midway point of the first period before Sault Ste. Marie got on the board at 11:34 thanks to Noah Solinger’s fourth goal of the season.

Hearst countered just 67 seconds later as Max Griffrioen also collected his fourth of the campaign.

Second stanza action saw the Thunderbirds tack on two more on efforts supplied by Baber at even strength half way through the session before adding the eventual difference maker during a Soo man advantage opportunity two minutes later.

The tight-checking affair stayed 3-1 Thunderbirds into the late latter stages of the contest when the Lumberjacks made it interesting as Spencer Silver pulled his side to within one at 17:13.

However the Thunderbirds tightened up from there to preserve the victory.

CCM player of the game accolades were presented to the Soo’s Baber as well as Hearst goalkeeper Artem Bortovskiy.
